Rusty Apollo in Budapest

Public statues are always so interesting. They are just standing there silent, watching us, watching the world. But they've got secrets. All statues have a tale to tell! Here is the statue of Apollo for example.

I live in the surrounding of Mechwart Park (named after András Mechwart mechanical engineer) so I see this statue almost every day. Classical Apollo statue, for the first sight nothing interesting. He is so sophisticated, standing lonely in the prolific bushes.

here is Apollo in Mechwart Park

The strange thing was that I found nothing about him. Really NOHING. But it is not an unimaginably old statue, I found it in an old newspaper. But nothing new informations: he is guarding on his place. Without rust.

And for another search, I found that he is not the only one! There are some replicas. One standing in the Buda Castle Palace, in such better conditions. One important difference: he lost his little leaf!

And one more similar Apollo in Károly Boulevard, in the heart of Budapest. This last one is brand new, it was placed after the renovation of the tram, about ten years ago. This statue is so new and shiny, and like his counterpart in the Buda Museum, he doesn't have a leaf- underwear! So this is the newest one, but still have no information. The original sculptor is unknown, all the replicas are made after the first one (the rusty Apollo). So similar (sorry, not similar, they are the same!), but looks quite different!
